Corn or maize or maize (wheat or Cretzschmar in Cyprus) is the scientific name Zea mays. The Greek scientific name of the plant is common or Maize Zea the mafs. Are cereal family of Pooeidon (Poaceae) or Grasses (Gramineae) and comes from the American continent where already before 5500 years the cultivated by the Incas, Mayans and Aztecs. The Greek name, "corn" means "wheat (wheat) of the Arabs" and was introduced in Greece in 1600 from North Africa.
 
The etymology of the word "corn" is still uncertain. The following embodiments have been proposed: (a) Albanian .kalambok (b) Italian .calambochi (c) Turkish .kalembek. The name Mayz (Mafs) comes from the language Tain (Mahiz) indigenous Caribbean by Spanish (Maíz).

The Spanish word (originally Native American) has affected the plant name in other languages: English Maize, French Maïs, Italian Mais, Swedish Majs, Norwegian Mais, Finnish Maissi, Estonian Mais.


It is an annual, tall plant with thick stems upright and compact, narrow and long leaves a sword shape and wavy edges. At the top of the plant is the male inflorescence forming tufts and has its name Panicle. The female inflorescence consists of a wide ear thick shaft, on which the flowers are in rows.


The inflorescence is called a cob. Then the position of the flowers get the granules covered by sheets while the top of the cob is plume consisting of many long capillary threads.
